Versatility is one of the things our local boy DJ Goldfish is known for. Starting out at the tender age of 15, Alvin Teoh (that’s his real name) rose quickly to the top and even managed to cop first place for both the 2000 Ecler and the 2002 Vestax Extravaganza Malaysian competitions along the way.
So what is the real deal with this DJ turned producer that’s got the ladies in a frenzy? If you’ve secretly wanted to pick his brain – we’ve got you covered!
BB: How did the name Goldfish come about?
G: Well, the name was given by a friend of mine about maybe about 10 years ago when I was younger at the age of 17. I hated it at first and thought it was rather silly... But I eventually stuck with it, cause all these girls were like "Aww thats cute!!" haha... yea... summin like
that! There’s no real definition for it.
BB: Have you achieved what you set out to achieve back when you first started out?
G: Whooa! I’ve achieved greater than what I expected... Never thought it would go to a stage like this... I guess the greatest achievement for me is to have touched numerous amount of people with emotions with what I do then rather an award or something...
BB: You’ve done a lot of shows, for example: you were the opening act with popular Too Phat for Linkin Park Live in Malaysia 2003, Rapfest! 2003, Salem Rev-Elations parties and Innovation Sessions, and the Rane TTM 56 Demo Showcase– what’s been the ultimate best one so far?
G: Haha, there's too many good ones and it has bad ones as well, but I cant really choose one... every event has it perks, whether is the people I meet, or the performance given, or maybe girls.. haha... yea.. It has been an experience.
BB: Tell us about The GoldLife. How did the idea come up?
G: Well, I did a video to promote the new night I was doing which was (4play) at the start... just to attract more attention for the event... Then, I an idea came about... "What if we introduced everyone in the crew?"... haha.. Then as jokers we are... We made a whole funny joke out of it.. And then I wanted to take it to the next level.. As in giving the consumer a taste of my lifestyle and what I do mostly... And the people I meet of course.. And it continued.. And as it goes.. Well
basically its pure fun and bringin' a different perspective to the audience.. Well, cause im always behind the decks and this would be me on the forefront.
BB: What inspired you to turn to producing instead?
G: I am a creative person and I always look through different outlets of expression.. And my fond for music gave me the opportunity to return the favor.. and i fell in love with it.. I feel that its apart of me to make music.. I’m put here to do so... haha... if I weren’t a producer or a DJ, id probably sing in a rock band or summin like that..
BB: What are your thoughts on the local English music scene?
G: Well, I’ve nothin but love for it, as long as the scene is ever evolving and the growth would be a blessing for all.. I’m gonna be apart of it soon.. so i should keep my freakin' mouth shut..! haha..
BB: What’s the best and worst thing about being a DJ?
G: Like I tell everyone... as anyone perceptions of a DJ, such as "DJs get all the money, girls, drugs, and all that"... yea.. Its all true :) Haha... but don’t get me wrong.. I don’t do drugs.. To each its own right... well like I said.. The best is for me to reach out to people to give them an emotion or feelin from what i do.. And the worst... the morning after.. Haha!
BB: Tell us about your personal style
G: My style.. "So cold, its impossible!" well, I have my own style, cant really put it in words.. its a
"freakinouterspacioushiphopishverbalizationformalizedfreshkid" dammnnn!!!..
BB: What are your favorite places to shop at? Name a couple of stores.
G: hmmm.. thats a good one.. I don’t really shop much here, I wear a lot of my own things.. I have a men's fashion store called 'Select' in Bangsar Baru, but I do spend money at Louis Vuitton, well no particular stores.. But shout out to Boundlezz at Sg Wang.
BB: Are there any style guru’s you look up to or emulate?
G: Well, definitely an amount of people that gives me inspiration.. But the styles crazy.. Its a mixture of everyone.. + me! But Kanye is king..!
BB: What are your fashion do’s & don’ts?
G: "Do everything that you don’t do, and don’t do everything that you already do!"
BB: If you had to pick one item of clothing that could sum up your personality – what would it be and why?
G: My sunglasses.. It just represent me a lot.. Im addicted to it.. Makes me fly! And also it gives the impression of curiosity for anyone that takes a glimpse..
BB: When it comes to fashion – what do you look out for in a girl?
G: fashion can be bought and style is an achievement.. I guess a stylish girl steals me..! What you think? :)
BB: What are words to live by according to DJ Goldfish?
G: "Make it solid gold!”
BB: What is the first thing that pops into your head when you hear the words Biatch Bible?
G: Youre nastttyyyy!!!... And I like it...!
